In a statement to NewsNation, the DHS said the truck driver was in the U.S. illegally.

A truck driver accused of causing a fatal crash in Hendricks County is now in federal custody after being detained by ICE, according to multiple law enforcement sources.

The victim's identity was not released as of Saturday night.

The effort follows an immigration enforcement operation last year that resulted in the arrest of 146 undocumented truck drivers in northwest Indiana.

Police say a "good Samaritan" saw the crash and stopped to help. However, police say they were unable to reach the driver.
