A French Navy FREMM-class frigate has been operating in waters near the Faroe Islands as part of France’s ongoing efforts to maintain visibility and cooperation in the High North. The activity supports regional partners and contributes to maritime awareness in northern sea routes that have gained increased strategic attention in recent years. Alongside the naval activity, a French Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft is scheduled to conduct a joint patrol with Swedish forces in the coming days.

The FREMM program is a joint Italian-French Defense industrial co-operation project for a new generation of frigates, having a common baseline, but differing from one country to the other as a function of different operational requirements. The frigates for the Italian Navy are built at the Fincantieri’s integrated naval shipyard of Riva Trigoso-Muggiano.
