The first Soviet production fighter capable of supersonic speeds in level flight, the prototype MiG-19 (NATO code-name "Farmer") made its first flight in September 1953. First flying in 1996, the MiG-AT was supposed to be a revolutionary jet trainer - the first dedicated training aircraft with adaptable fly-by-wire, allowing it to mimic the handling characteristics of various different front line fighters. It was developed mainly in Russia, but with considerable French collaboration. Faced by stiff competition both in Russia and abroad, the MiG-AT ultimately gained no orders and was quietly axed.
