What Do These Words Mean? Deaf, deaf, Hard of Hearing, late-deafened? These words describe different ways people experience hearing and communication: 🧏 Deaf (with a capital D) This usually means someone who uses New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and is part of the Deaf community. They see being Deaf as part of their identity and culture. 👂 deaf (with a small d) This means someone who has little or no hearing.
